It’s January. Cue the post-holiday sales on protein powder and a million resolutions to eat healthy and get fit (according to a recent YouGov poll, those topped the list for most popular New Year’s resolutions in 2018). But when the mercury drops and the snow comes down it can be hard to find the motivation to get to the gym. Luckily, for residents at Markham Square, the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (TPASC) is a hop, skip, and a jump away, putting fitness, fun, and community close at hand.

If you haven’t heard of the TPASC, allow us to introduce you. The massive complex – the largest single investment in Canadian amateur sport history – is a legacy of the 2015 Toronto Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. The 312,000 square foot facility features 2 Olympic-sized swimming pools, a 5-metre dive tank with diving platforms and spring boards, 4 gymnasiums (big enough to hold four basketball courts or six volleyball courts), a 200-metre indoor track, a two-storey fitness centre, a 41-foot high climbing wall, and 4 studios.

Since opening, the centre, co-owned by the City of Toronto and the University of Toronto, has been a training ground for many of Canada’s top athletes, but it’s also a community recreation space, a place for students and neighbours of all ages to train, play, gather, and compete.

Interested but don’t know where to start? Try pairing the 200-metre indoor track and a weekly line up of yoga classes, or the 10-lane swimming pool and group fitness like Tabata Bootcamp or Triple Threat for the best fitness mashups touted in 2018. Perfect your pull-up in the Strength & Conditioning Studio. Or break out of the fitness box with something totally unexpected like archery, pickleball, or underwater hockey. You can access personal trainers, dietitians, and body composition testing. There’s even free fitness assessments and child minding (so now there’s no excuse not to hit the gym).

In 2015 the world’s best athletes competed at the TPASC and now you can too. Make 2018 the year you say yes to possibility, yes to community, and yes to a whole new you.
